The Illutionist (2006)

A poor talented magician Eisenheim falls in love with Sophie well above his social class in his teenage; her parents have hired his father as a cabinetmaker. He makes her a puzzle locker, when if twisted to open correctly reveals a hidden photo of Eisenheim. Although they are forbidden to see each other, they meet in a secret hideout chamber in the woods. One day, two of them are separated.

Years after, he meets Sophie at one of his performances where he finds out that Sophie is expected to marry the Crown Prince, who purportedly has a history of abuse towards women. They finds out that two of them are still in love with each other and they plan to flee the Empire together.

The Crown Prince, Leopold finds out from inspector Uhl that Sophie has been meeting with Eisenheim. The tension between Eisenheim grows. Eisenheim prepares a new kind of magic show which summons spirits on the stage. And in one of the shows which Leopold also attends, Eisenheim summons the spirit of Sophie who says someone in the theater murdered her, which panicks Leopold.

Uhl is ordered to arrest Eisenheim by Leopold, Eisenheim’s body fades and disappears like his summoned spirits. And this is how the couple disappear and flee the Empire just in front of the crowd and lives together happily. Uhl informs the Emperor of the Leopold’s murder of Sophie and while the Army approaching his Palace to arrest him, Leopold shoots himself after angrily justifying his plans to overthrow his father.

I am not a person, who likes to watch magic shows, and it would be even worse to watch magic in movies, however, in the Illusionist movie, the impressive plots and tricks are very stunning and breathtaking. The Illusionist is the right blend of romance and mystery and it is a masterpiece of movie magic.
